Celebrating Excellence in Sport Law: The 2026 SRLA Awards Luncheon
The Sport and Recreation Law Association (SRLA) gathered in New Orleans to shine a spotlight on academic excellence and leadership in the field of sport law during its annual Honors and Awards Luncheon. This event not only commemorated exceptional contributions to sport law but also created a collaborative atmosphere, encouraging emerging leaders and scholars to engage with seasoned professionals.
Highlighting Remarkable Achievements
Among the honors presented was the esteemed Bernard “Patrick” Maloy Graduate Student Research Award, awarded to Marshall Graves from Southeastern Louisiana University. His paper, titled "From One-And-Done to Paid-And-Stayed: The NCAA’s Strengthened Monopsony Power in Men’s Basketball," has garnered attention for its critical analysis of NCAA policies. This accolade, named after a well-respected figure in sport law academia, underscores the importance of robust research in shaping policy discussions.
The Importance of Student Participation
The event also featured a lively Graduate Case Study Cup and Undergraduate Research Competition. These competitions showcase students’ abilities to tackle pressing contemporary issues within sport law. All participants, including winner Alex Lee from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, delivered commendable presentations that highlighted the innovative thinking necessary for future legal challenges in sports.
Recognizing Dedication to Community and Education
This year’s Kristi Schoepfer Service-Learning Award honored VanMullem for her initiative, “Runnin’ with the Cougs! Preparing for Your Future in Sport.” This award reflects the association's commitment to integrating community service with education, empowering law students to create meaningful impacts through their work.
A Legacy of Leadership and Service
The luncheon culminated with the presentation of the Herb Appenzeller SRLA Honor Award, which went to Gil Fried for his extensive contributions to sport law education and mentorship. Similarly, the Betty van der Smissen Leadership Award recognized Holt Hackney for his influential role in advancing research and professional development in the field. Both awards serve as reminders of the vital role that leadership plays in fostering an informed and effective community of sport law professionals.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Sport Law
The SRLA Awards Luncheon not only highlights the contributions of its members but also sets the tone for collaboration in future developments within sport law. By recognizing the accomplishments of students and professionals alike, the event serves as a catalyst for discussion on best practices and the importance of continuous education in sport law.
